As the reauthorization of this controversial act goes forward the exciting and positive news is that for the first time in the history of education Middle Level is receiving focus. Please do your part in offering your opinions and experiences to our VT Senators and Representative Welch.
Senator Obama (D-IL) was joined by Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) in introducing the Senate version of “Success in the Middle” S. 2227, a bill that would authorize grants to states and school districts to improve low-performing middle schools.

A companion bill HR 3406 was introduced in the House by Representative

Grijalva (D-AZ) and currently has 15 cosponsors. Representative Grijalva will offer “Success in the Middle” as an amendment when NCLB is marked up by the House Education and Workforce Committee.

Senator Obama will try to get his bill included in the Senate HELP Committee’s NCLB proposal that is expected to go to mark-up by the end of this year.

NMSA will continue to lead this effort as one of the nine founding members of the Middle Grades Coalition on NCLB and work with other national education organizations to strengthen support for federal middle grades policy as part of No Child Left Behind. But the most important voice is that of the individual middle grades educator who takes the time to explain to their elected leaders why middle grade students deserve their help. We hope you will take that time and write or call your Senators and Representatives urging them to cosponsor HR 3406 or S 2227 today!

We have a very limited window of opportunity to influence our federal legislators to support the Success in the
Middle Act - Senate bill 2227 & House bill 3406.
Here is what people on "the Hill" are telling us:

* NMSA's legislative person has pushed these bills
as far as she can.
* NMSA (as an organization) has pushed these bills
as far as it can.
* They now need to hear from "people from home"
to see whether they support this bill.

So your participation - within the next two weeks - is vital!
We have created a web page (www.nmsa.org/supportsuccess) that details an easy step-by-step process with resources you can use for yourself and for communicating with legislators and education staffers on the Hill. We trust you will take a few moments to review the materials and get involved.
Thanks for everything you do for NMSA and the young adolescents whose lives you impact.
